Dirge of the Day

Need another reason to read my free, weekly newsletter about death and dying? That description should be reason enough, but I’ll give you one anyway: Dirge of the Day.

I listen to an absurd amount of music in my daily life. I’m constantly searching for new artists that strike my fancy, and I spend more on concerts than I probably should. So when I created The Columbarium, I knew I had to incorporate music somehow.

In the Dirge of the Day section of the newsletter, I link to a song about death and dying on YouTube—and I created a YouTube playlist so you can listen to all the dirges in one place.

As you can see, I kicked things off with Blue Öyster Cult’s 1976 classic “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper.” But the playlist defies genre; it also includes Death Cab for Cutie, Noname, Kesha, The Chicks, and Chopin.

In the past, I’ve asked people for their death song recommendations, but very few have taken me up on the offer. Drop me a line if there’s anything you want to hear. And subscribe to the newsletter for your morbid audio needs and more!
